What is Homeopathy? - By Dr. Rahim, MD

Dr Rahim
Dr. Samuel Hahnemann

"Homeopathy" was first introduced to the public in 1796. During this year Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, physician and pharmacist, published after many years of intensive research his fundamental thoughts about a new cure, which he called Homeopathy (Homoin pathos=similar ache or pain). The basic idea behind this new method is the treatment of the disease according to the principle of similarity: Similia similibus curentur= "Like to be treated by like". That is to say treating all illness with a substance when taken by a healthy individual produces symptoms similar to this displayed by the individual who is ill. In other words a substance which in a healthy individual produces the symptoms of a disease will, in an individual suffer from the disease, have a curative effect.

The father of homeopathy Dr. Samuel Hahnemann (1755 - 1843) Homeopathy is the branch of medicine founded by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann MD and Pharmacist based on the rule “Similia Simbilus Cumentar” like

These simple words describe Hahnemann`s approach to working with (and not against) the body’s own healing powers. When we are ill, we try to regain the balance of health, this is called “homeostasis”. Symptoms and signs are not only manifestations of the struggle to achieve the state of health again; they are also the necessary steps to bring about that balance. For example, viruses do not survive at elevated temperatures. When ill with an infection, inflammation associated with a virus, the body elevates its own temperature.

This very symptom is the mechanism for destroying the virus. The therapy that works with the healing process would help to maintain that febrile state and not bring down the temperature with aspirin or acetaminophen. Therefor a substance which in a healthy individual would create a certain group of symptoms, in the very remedy for the ill patient that exhibits that very symptom complex. “Similia Simibilus Cunenrun”.

In addition homeopathic remedies are prepared in an intenuated (dilute) form. This attenuation process releases therapeutic properties while eliminating harmful physiological actions or side effects caused by more substantial doses.

  • Homeopathic tests on the healthy individual
  • After starting appropriate medicine, the individuals symptoms aggravate
  • Choosing the right medicine according to the principle of similarity

1 - The homeopathic test on a healthy individual forms the basic knowledge for application of homeopathic medicine. Healthy experimentees take a homeopathic substance over a specific defined time period. All changes in health and symptoms are meticulously documented. Those are called probings. Test symptoms (probings) build the basis for the "Medicine Picture", a compilation of all symptoms. Also, "Medicine Pictures" include homeopathical-pharmacological and toxilogical tests and the theraputical experience when treating the patient. In summary, a "Medicine Picture" represents the whole knowledge about the effectiveness of the homeopathic medicine.

2 - The aggravation of one's symptoms comprises a detailed anamnese (case history) which takes under consideration all physical symptoms the patients shows. A typical conventional anamnese only looks at symptoms of the illness/disease. On the contrary, a homeopathic anamnse pays special attention to the individual, unusual and conspicuous symptoms. Also, illnesses from the past, particular likes and dislikes can give important information to the practitioner.

3 - According to the above described findings on the "Medicine Picture" the most similar medicine will be prescribed. Homeopathy concentrates on treating the individual rather than the disease that it follows, and therefore, the practitioner does not automatically prescribe a specific remedy for a specific illness. Instead he tries to define the individual's temperament and response and so prescribes on a more individual basis. Individuals suffering from the same disease require different remedies. On the other hand, another group of patients with different illnesses may all benefit from the same remedy.

Dr. Hahnemann started his research with concentrated substances. Later he tried to reduce the toxicity of his medicines through step-by-step dilution to decrease its side effects. To his surprise, he realized that with special dilution processes his medicines increased in potential instead to diminish. He named the process "Potency". This includes the above mentioned step-by-step dilution, successions with an alcohol-water mixture or to rub the medicine into milk or sugar.

1 - D-Potency (Decimal Potency) Dilution 1:10 with 10x successions with each step.
2 - C-Potency (Centisssimal-potency) Dilution 1:100 with 10x successions with each step.
3 - LM-Potency (Quinquagintamillesimal-potency or Q-Potency) Dilution 1:50.000 with 100x successions within each step.

To choose the "right" potency one has to orient itself on the sensibility of the patient. However, this is only secondary (choosing the potency) than to find the right "Medicine Picture". In general one uses low potencies for physical illnesses, injuries or acute infections. For psychological symptoms one uses high potencies.

  • Dilutions (alcohol based)
  • Tablets (lactose based, secondary active substances: wheat starch, magnesium stearat)
  • Globuli (mini tablets made from pure Saccharin)
  • Ointments or Nose Drops

The most used forms are dilutions, tablets, and globuli. The latter is especially beneficial to children, since it contains no alcohol and is more easily to measure in exact doses. Lactose intolerance or Zoeliale requires a dilution of the globuli before administration.

The most important part of the homeopathic treatment is the careful observation of the patient during and after taking the medicine. The patient's reaction to the medicine gives the practitioner important indication for further actions. Once in a while there can be first an aggravation of the symptoms, only to resolve quickly into the healing process. Therefore, the body is reacting to the irritant and it is considered a good sigh. Again, this only takes a short time and healing sets in fast.

  • Symptoms improve from the inside to the outside
  • Symptoms improve from the top to the bottom of the body
  • Symptoms improve in reversed order of incurrence.

In the course of a treatment symptoms from earlier illnesses can re-appear. As long as this pattern adheres to the "Hering-Rule" this is assessed as a healing reaction.

In Summary, Homeopathy is a safe treatment with no side effects and all natural medicine.

"The natural medicine lends its power to the individual. Therefore choose the one which is gentle, fast, sure and long lasting. Each disease has a medicine that can cause it as well as cure it"

"Homeopathy is wholly capable of satisfying the therapeutic demands of this age better than any other system or school of medicine."
Dr. Charles Menninger M.D.
Founder Menninger Clinic

"Homeopathy .... cures a larger percentage of cases than any other method of treatment and is beyond doubt safer and more economical and most complete medical science."
Mahatama Gandhi

"Affective natural remedies that have no side effects"
Dr. Robert Mendelsohn, M.D.
Professor, University of Illinois Medical School and best-selling author

"Homeopathy is the safest and more reliable approach to ailments and has withstood the assaults of established medical practice for over 100 years."
Yehudi Menuhin
World famous violinist

"The introduction of homeopathy forced the old school doctor to stir around and learn something of a rational nature about his business. You may honestly feel grateful that homeopathy survived the attempts of allopaths (the orthodox physicians to destroy it."
Mark Twain

"There have been two great revelations in my life: The first was bepop, the second was homeopathy."

Mother TheresaThe fact that Britain's Royal Family are strong supporters of homeopathy sometimes gives people the incorrect image of homeopathy as primarily a medical treatment for the upper class. Those of us involved in homeopathy know better. We know that homeopathy can be of value to anyone who is sick.

The fact that homeopathy is practiced in India by more trained health professionals than anywhere else in the world provides some evidence that one does not have to be rich to experience the benefits of homeopathy. At present, there are over 100 four- or five-year homeopathic medical colleges in India.

Caring for the poor is nothing new to Mother Teresa. She has worked with and for the poorest of the poor for over a half century. She has brought a message of love to them, and her Missionaries of Charity have provided medical care to millions of people. The physicians and paraprofessionals who have worked in her Missions have not simply prescribed conventional drugs, they have also prescribed homeopathic medicines. Mother Teresa has a special interest in homeopathic medicine because of its effectiveness and low cost.

At present, four charitable homeopathic dispensaries are run under the guidance of the Mother's Missionaries of Charity. One of these dispensaries primarily provides homeopathic medicines to poor and sick children in Calcutta, while the other three provide homeopathic medicines to anyone who needs them. Considering the serious health problems that poor people in India experience, it is truly miraculous that homeopathic medicines are so effective as the primary method of treatment for many children and many adults.

Mother Teresa opened her first charitable homeopathic dispensary in Calcutta in 1950. She even prescribes homeopathic medicines herself sometimes.

Prince Charles"Prince Charles is working on a personal remedy for the ills of the NHS, with plans to help build a model hospital that would tap into the power of alternative therapy. It will train doctors to combine conventional medicine and alternative treatments, such as homeopathy, Ayurvedic medicine and acupuncture, and will have up to 100 beds. The prince's intervention marks the culmination of years of campaigning by him for the NHS to assign a greater role to alternative medicine. In a recent speech he urged the NHS not to dismiss it as a "woolly cul-de-sac".
Groups interested in alternative medicine are delighted at the news. Teresa Hale, founder of the Hale Clinic in London, said: "Twenty-five years ago people said we were quacks. Now several branches, including homeopathy, acupuncture and osteopathy, have gained official recognition."

The proposed hospital, which is due to open in London in 2003 or early 2004, is to be overseen by Mosaraf Ali, who runs the Integrated Medical Centre (IMC) in London. He is also responsible for raising finance for its construction. Ali's clients are said to include the prince and celebrities such as Geri Halliwell and Kate Moss. Earlier this year Ali, who trained as a doctor in Delhi and Moscow, accompanied Camilla Parker Bowles on a trek to the Himalayas to "re-energise" her spirits and encourage her to give up smoking.

The prince has held exploratory talks with Ali over the past six months about giving official royal support to the hospital. This weekend Ali was in India and unavailable for comment, but Eleanor Stoikov, his clinical manager, said: "The prince is giving support, but not in a financial way." A spokesman for St James's Palace said: "It is an interesting proposition and they have had private discussions on the matter. The prince has argued for some time for a greater role for integrated medicine." He added that the prince had set up the Foundation for Integrated Medicine in 1996, and provided it with Pounds 2m of funding. It is thought that the prince's foundation, based in east London, is providing advice to Ali.

Alternative therapy tends to be more expensive than conventional medicine. Critics have pointed to its failure to cure serious diseases and to match the leaps in clinical techniques. The late John Diamond, the writer who died of cancer, stated: "More and more people (are) discovering the true secret of alternative medicine: it doesn't work." He added: "How many herbalists came up with a cure for a single form of cancer? You can count them on the fingers of one foot."

Ali's methods of diagnosis are unconventional. He inspects patients' tongues and believes ears reveal whether someone is suffering from any inflammation. Ali has described ears as "upside-down embryos".

The prince was introduced to the holistic approach to life by the late Laurens van der Post, and began a campaign in 1982 to persuade the medical establishment to form closer links to complementary medicine. He was aware of public ridicule, asking one official: "Do people think I am a crank?" after he meditated in public. He has taken advantage of alternative therapies to ameliorate the effects of a series of injuries from polo and skiing and a recurrent disc problem. Since 1988 the prince has enlisted Sarah Key, an Australian physiotherapist and osteopath, who detects back pain through her heels, to help soothe his polo injuries.

An eclectic group of healers, fixers and gurus has long surrounded other members of the royal family. The queen is said to carry homeopathic remedies with her at all times, and the late Diana, Princess of Wales made use of yoga, reflexology and massage. The country's 36,000 GPs are now outnumbered by the estimated 50,000 complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) practitioners. There are signs that mainstream practice is moving closer to the prince's wishes. Earlier this year the NHS executive approved an Pounds 18.4m scheme to renovate the Royal London homeopathic hospital (RLHH), its principal complementary medicine.
