Your kidneys are two bean-shaped organs, each about the size of your fist. They are located in the middle of your back, just below your rib cage, on either side of your spine.  Kidneys receive blood through the renal artery, process it, removing the wastes and other unwanted substances as urine, which flows from the kidneys through the urethra to the bladder. In the bladder the urine is stored until it is excreted from the body by another branch of the urethra. The processed blood is then returned to the body through the renal vein. This process is a continuous one, hence it is important that the kidneys be kept in a healthy, functioning state.

Functions of the Kidneys
The kidneys have a number of functions. First, as mentioned above, the kidneys act as a filtering system, separating urea, mineral salts, toxins and other waste products from the blood. The kidneys also conserve the water, essential salts and electrolytes needed for the functioning of other organs and systems within the body. At least one kidney must function properly for life to be maintained.

Diseases and Conditions of the Kidneys
Some of the most common kidney diseases and conditions are: polycystic kidney disease, nephrosis, nephritis, diabetic nephropathy, kidney stones, and renal tubular acidosis.
